My daughter Allison caught some of the excitement the day we could not locate any of the puppies.

When the pups were about 7 or 7-1/2 weeks old, my daughter asked where the puppies were. Under the car? No, she'd checked there. So I went outside and called for them as I walked around the house and again under the car. Nothing. I started walking down the drive to see if they went on an unescorted visit to Buddy across the street. As I walked down the driveway still calling out "puppies", 2 white furry heads popped out of the culvert beneath our driveway and ran up the hill to greet me. I should have suspected something, as Dakota sat in the driveway looking out that direction.

The video Allison caught on her cell phone camera was after the first few came out. All 7 of them had been resting there, some within reach, some not.

The first time they disappeard into the culvert, they readily came out to my calling. The next time, Dakota sat on the crest of our drive looking worried, hearing them but not seeing them, sitting obediently within the "safe zone" of our yard. When I assured her it was OK to cross the boundary she hesitantly came to my side and peered in.The pups eagerly came out to greet their mom.

A couple of times after that, they stayed in watching us, or sleeping peacefully. One time Simba (Maverick) refused to budge. Rolling a skate board at him didn't help either. My daughter slept in the Jeep at the end of the drive that night. He finally wandered out about 2:00 in the morning, thirsty.

For a couple days I put rolls of carpet at the entry to both ends of the culvert. But that didn't stop them. They somehow squeezed in.

A couple of times Dakota crept in to retrieve them, wriggling herbackside and pushing with her front paws to back out of the hole.Incredible.

The pups curiosity appears to be extending to a wider world. Good timing, as within this next week they'll each travel to their new homes and they'll have brand new things to explore. We'll miss them and their antics!
